Let The Games Begin!

by Sandra Jopling, JH Counselor

September 09, 2009

The long, hot days of summer may have followed us into September, but the days of lounging around are no more. Our Jr. High students are already hard at work and doing well, making the transition rather smoothly.
In preparing for the new school year, we decided to incorporate some team building activities for our campus. These activities began on Day One. Teachers spent time with their classes getting to know each other and going over the student handbook ... somewhat typical of the first day of school. However, days two and three were full of hands-on activities and campus interaction.
In trying to build a campus “team”, all three grade levels intermingled for activities such as the Three-Legged Relay and People Bingo. Some of you may have heard about our Teacher Three-Legged Relay. If not, ask your child. It was a hoot! The students, and even some teachers, had a blast.
Why team building? We want to foster in our students an awareness of team spirit and to reinforce commitment. We hope to help build strong interpersonal relationships and to inspire our students to branch out beyond their grade level and comfort zone. Some other attributes include improving communication, trusting each other, working together, and getting to know each other.
Through team building we hope to accomplish these tasks and improve other skills in our students, as well as providing them a solid foundation in their education. We are hoping to schedule other team building activities/days throughout the year. If you have any suggestions for activities, you can email them to me at joplings@lytleisd.com.
