Campus Not Slowing Down Towards End of the Year

As the school year draws to an end, the activities at the elementary campus are in full swing. One of newest opportunities available to our students is C’Motion, a computerized dance trainer that helps students dance their way into being fit. The program is being offered May 12-19. Students participating in the program watch a series of commands on a TV monitor and follow the step-for-step commands on electronic pads on the floor. Before they know it, the students are dancing and getting fit.
As the students step on their game pads, they measure their steps on a pedometer. Students also learn to measure their heart rates. Two of our fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Rubio and Mrs. Zimmerlie joined in on all the fun. We would like to thank Coach Tara Wyrwich for organizing and facilitating the program on our campus.
Another event focusing on fitness and health was the Health Fair on May 08. A variety of presenters including Region 20, HEB, and Dairy Max gave demonstrations on topics including healthy eating, proper nutrition, exercise, hand washing, and agriculture. The students were given 15-minute demonstrations on building healthy habits.
For Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5-9, the campus leadership team held a luncheon. Teachers were served an Italian style lunch including music and candles. This small token was in response to how much we truly appreciate all our teachers.
Three other events in May included cake decorating for Mother’s day sponsored by HEB, a Scholastic Book Fair sponsored by the librarian Carey Gray, and the Whitley Mobile Dental Care Program. All profit earned from the book fair goes to buy more books for our library.
The Whitley Dental program offers dental exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment, sealants, fillings and other dental treatment at affordable prices. Medicaid or CHIPS recipients are fully covered for these services and all follow-up treatments. Keep in mind that this service will be available next school year.
Other activities included a Site-Based Decision Making Committee Meeting where Mrs. White and Mr. Huntsucker were elected as new members. Members discussed budget proposals and federal grants.
We are also proud of our fifth grade band students for their performance in the Spring Concert on May 15. The fifth grade band showed off their division one trophy they earned at the Pirate Land Invitational. Special performances were given by Jeremy Fender, Zoe Emley, Michelle Owen, and Marisela Rios who will be competing in Solo and Ensemble competition on May 22.
