Junior High Hosts Second Academic Festival

by Webmaster Webmaster

March 14, 2008

Greetings from the Jr. High!!

On March 12, 2008 we hosted our second annual ELA/Social Studies Academic Festival. This event was the brainchild of Ms. Marcrum and Ms. Jopling. The purpose of the program is to expose parents and students to a myriad of fun activities. The activities are interactive, participatory, enlightening and most importantly it is open to the community. Since the fall of 2006, when we implemented our first academic festival, it has become part of who we are. Our vision is that the festivals will reach a point where they are an expectation—a Lytle Jr. High tradition.

Our English department, which consists of Ms. Lopez, Ms. Koehler, Ms. Garcia, Ms. Vela, Ms. Siller, Ms. Urban, and Mr. Haass, provided such diverse games as Spanish Scrabble, Scrabble, Rosetta Stone, grammar and literature questions, and the always fun Spelling Bee. Ms. Urban, Ms. Garcia and Coach Smith emceed the contest which pits teachers and parents against students. The students consistently put on a good show and challenge the adults.

Our Social Studies department, which consists of Mr. Nickle, Ms. Potter, Ms. Gillard, Ms. Woodruff, and Coach Foster, demonstrated Google Earth and our eInstruction hardware. They also provided blank maps in which participants identified states. Other activities included a jigsaw puzzle, a travel map, and Texas bingo. This festival is a team effort in that all our teachers and staff participate in the preparation of all the activities. I can honestly say I am blessed to be surrounded by such awesome and professional people.

We provided Frito pie, nachos, and tea for all the participants. Although we did not have as many folks as we had hoped for it was a good turn out. We thank every single parent and child who took some time out of their schedule to visit and spend a couple of hours with the Lytle Jr. High family.
