Special Education Students Get Ready for Spring Events

by Teresa Kreger

March 14, 2008

The Life Skills Class teachers are getting their students ready for the annual Track and Field Day sponsored by Somerset ISD on April 24, 2008. Lytle ISD will be sending 28-30 students from all four campuses ranging from ages 3-18 to participate in this event.
Our students will participate in two track events and in all of the field events. Track events will consist of 10 meter assisted walk/wheelchair and 10,25,50,75,100 meter runs. Field events will consist of noodle toss, Frisbee toss, softball throw, and standing long jump. The opening ceremony begins at 9:00 am at Somerset’s football stadium. All the students are looking forward to this wonderful opportunity and experience. Parents are welcomed to come out and cheer their children on.

Special Education students are gearing up to take on the new state assessments. Long gone are days of TAKS-I, SDAA II and LDAA assessments. The TAKS Modified (TAKS-M) is replacing those tests. Of course, they still will have the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills), TAKS with Accommodations (TAKS-A), TAKS Modified (TAKS-M), or TAKS Alternate (TAKS-ALT) as other options. The decision as to which test to take is still made by the ARDC (Annual, Review, & Dismissal Committee). All of the students will be taking these tests at their enrolled grade level. The ARDC will no longer be setting the passing standards for the TAKS-M. The Texas Education Agency will select the passing standards for TAKS-M and will release it towards the end of the summer. The ARDC will also determine what accommodations will be provided to assist the students in passing these tests.
