LHS Students Begin the Swim to Reach the Beach!

by Rose Mary Mares

March 12, 2008

At a recent conference, a principal stood before his captive audience and encouraged administrators to focus not only on the academic side, but more importantly, to work on the motivational factors that will encourage students to perform at their absolute highest level on the TAKS. But when one thinks of state assessments, it is highly unlikely that any thought of going to the beach comes to mind. More common thoughts for teachers are those filled with stress as they continue to equip students with the necessary tools to master the state assessment monster – TAKS! Students, especially those at the exit-level (11th grade) know that walking across the stage to receive their high school diploma is contingent on meeting the state standard on this dreaded test. To help ease the pressure and stress as students begin the annual test-taking trek, and to help the students concentrate on a positive outcome, we wanted to find a final destination that would celebrate their success.

So grab your sunglasses, sunscreen and flip flops as Lytle High School students begin the swim to Reach the Beach! The staff has challenged the students to dive into the test and set a target to reach the state recognized status – and the beach! Although there are numerous indicators one school must meet to reach that distinguished honor, the students’ outcome has the greatest impact on success percentages. To reach the beach, each grade level must hit the 70% mark – the mark of recognized – in four groupings: all students, White, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged. Students have enthusiastically accepted the challenge and are readying their fishing poles and beach gear in preparation to REACH THE BEACH!
